If I go to the GPS head unit when this is happening and try to change the volume or station it works just fine. They work when the vehicle is first started. i understand your concern for safety, but i think it's even safer to tell people how to do it properly, than to let them guess or worse...use a haynes manual. They would come back after turning the car off, get back in the morning and they'd work.

I have seen this issue on other Nissans, and some have reprograms available for the head unit via CD or USB stick.
